Fairy Tale Worlds: Exploring Classics and Crafting New Tales

Step into the enchanting realm of classic fairy tales with our immersive course designed for high school students. Throughout the program, participants will delve into seven timeless tale types: "Little Red Riding Hood," "Beauty and the Beast," "Snow White," "Sleeping Beauty," "Cinderella," "Bluebeard," and "Tricksters." Each grouping will feature multicultural versions, literary rescriptings, and annotations by Maria Tatar.

In addition to these beloved stories, students will also explore tales by renowned authors Hans Christian Andersen and Oscar Wilde. Our course will also feature more than fifteen critical essays that delve into the various aspects of fairy tales, with interpretations by Ernst Bloch, Walter Benjamin, Max Lüthi, Lewis Hyde, Jessica Tiffin, and Hans-Jörg Uther.

Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to showcase their creativity through writing projects focused on retelling classic tales and crafting their unique fairy tale worlds. By engaging with the rich history and cultural significance of these stories, participants will develop a deeper appreciation for the genre while honing their own storytelling skills.

While this class is not a part of EWS, it will draw on the proven writing methods used in our grade school levels, including five-paragraph essay writing and creative writing. All students will need a Gmail account to access our Google Classroom interface, where they can submit assignments, engage in discussions, and collaborate with their peers.

Join us as we embark on a magical journey through the world of fairy tales, fostering a love for storytelling and inspiring the next generation of authors to create their own happily ever afters.
